Vactor Services: Subsurface Stormwater System Cleaning

Why Underground Systems Need Maintenance

Underground detention and infiltration systems are designed to store, infiltrate, or slowly release stormwater runoff to manage peak flows and protect downstream waterways. These systems often consist of underground chambers, perforated pipes, stone reservoirs, or modular storage units located beneath parking lots, roadways, and landscaped areas.

Over time, sediment, fines, and debris enter the system through inlets and connecting pipes and begin to accumulate within the chambers and stone reservoirs. This buildup reduces the available storage capacity and can clog infiltration areas, limiting the system’s ability to function as designed.

Because these systems are located underground, issues often go unnoticed during routine surface inspections until flooding, poor drainage, or system failure occurs. Regular inspection and maintenance help restore system capacity, maintain proper flow, and ensure long-term stormwater performance.
